Necedah Wildlife Refuge Park Entrance is located in Necedah Township, Kingston Township, Cutler Township, and Finley Township of Juneau County just west of Necedah, WI. 54646.   Many years ago glaciers were beginning to form The Central Wisconsin Swamp that later became what is now a natural refuge that is home to many varieties of plants and animals.  This area of Wisconsin has a history that is rich in Native American culture.  In 1939, President Roosevelt declared 43,000 acres of land in Wisconsin as the Necedah Migratory Waterfowl Refuge.  Part of this area is now the Necedah Wildlife Refuge. It is a popular branch in the National Wildlife Refuge System that contains over 500 refuges consisting of a whopping 92 million acres!  If you are to get the chance to visit this amazing landmark, the best time to view the different wildlife is either during early morning and/or evening.

The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge entertains and educates about 150,000 visitors each year.  It is a haven for waterfowl, deer, turkeys, song birds, & other species.  But more than that, it creates an awareness of the uncertain future and delicate existence of the Whooping Crane in nature.  It is crucial to support of the efforts of the folks dedicated to help keep this spectacular species flourishing.  This will help ensure they will survive for the enjoyment of generations to come.

Boghaunter Hiking Trail which is located in the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge of Juneau County just outside of Necedah WI.  The Boghauter Trail consists of 3 named trail loops; Meadow Beauty Loop 0.8 miles offering a level mowed hiking area, Boardwalk Loop 1.75 miles sets a hike through sedge meadow plus prairie lands and finally Tamarack Loop 3.6 miles features a winding hike through several wildlife habitats, marshes and forests.   Boghaunter Trail was named after the Ringed Boghaunter Dragonfly which is in the Emerald family.  These dragonflies start out as a nymph then grow into an adult about 1.8 inches with a dark brown body, grayish blue eyes with a brownish orange head.  They can be found flying around the Wildlife Refuge in late spring about May & June.

Buckhorn State Park WI is located in Germantown Township of Juneau County, Central Wisconsin on both Castle Rock Lake and the Yellow River.  The park consists of about 6,000 acres of outdoor haven offering a little bit for everyone including the local Wisconsin Wildlife.  There’s lot of outdoor photography opportunities and nature experiences to have if its camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, trapping, boating, swimming, fishing, backpacking, picnicking or just sitting back and watching the natural world go by.  The state park includes miles of frontage and several boat launches offering tons of water activities on the Yellow River and Castle Rock Lake part of the Wisconsin Flowage system.  Castle Rock is WI’s 4th largest inland body of water and is a manmade lake controlled by a hydro dam (creating hydroelectricity) to the South where the water turns back into the Wisconsin River.

Buckhorn State Park Camping:
There are a total of 53 campsites, 42 backpack / cart-in sites, about 3 drive in sites, 3 Group sizes up to 40 people and 1 handicap accessible campsite.  This state park has a unique cart-in campsite giving you that true rustic camping feeling plus some camping areas are open year round for you snow enthusiast.

Big Roche-A-Cri Lake is located in Central Wisconsin in Adams County just north of Adams/Friendship.  This 200+ acre lake has a max depth of 20 feet.  Big Roche-A-Cri Creek feeds it from the East and it turns back into Big Roche-A-Cri Creek after the dam to the west.  The water then flows several miles and deposits into Arkdale Lake.  From there, the water flows on into Castle Rock Lake.  It is part of the Wisconsin River system.  Big Roche-A-Cri Lake is known for its great pan fish, large mouth bass and northern pike fishing. You’ll see the occasional jet ski and water skiers out there, but after 6 pm it has a no-wake speed limit.

Welcome to the home of Turkey Vultures, Whitetail, Squirrels and the Red Fox.  The Park was established in 1948 is 605 acres of woods, prairie plus Roche-A-Cri Mound.  This unique State Park has many different recreational activities from sight-seeing to hiking 303 steps up the top of Roche A Cri Mound.  Several rest areas offer different settings where you can enjoy a nice picnic. There are 41 rustic campsites available and the park even offer’s campfire wood for your convenience. If you wish to climb the hill, there is a 300 foot stairway that includes resting places along the way. During your journey through Roche-A-Cri State Park, you will find areas that tell the history of the hill. At the top is a platform that will allow you to see 10 different counties, many great Lakes, Friendship Mound, and plenty of other unique places for discovery.
